History of the Gran Fondo in Israel
The Gran Fondo (GF) road cycling events began in Italy in the 1970’s involving a timed course of at least 120km with a mass start of riders. In the last 45 years many GF events have been established throughout Europe and North America. The first Israeli Gran Fondo the “Clal Health Gran Fondo”, took place in April 2012.
Since then Gran Fondo Israel has brought the first Gran Fondo to the north of Israel from the Gilboa region to Mount Hermon and in the south from the Dead Sea to Sde Boker. In 2015 the Gran Fondo Dead Sea joined forces with the Israel Cycling Federation, the organizers of the Tour of Arad. Together we created the largest international road cycling event in Israel the Gran Fondo Dead Sea Arad Cycling Festival.
In 2019, Gran Fondo Israel, the pioneering cycling events company, moved the event to a different venue, the Sapir park, an oasis in the middle of the desert. The famous trail of Scorpion’s pass will be ridden this year as well!
In 2020 the event evolved again, becoming the most challenging one day road race in Israel!
